The Design, Automation, Manufacturing, and Processes (DAMP) laboratory, located within the Biological Design Center (BDC), is one of 40+ core facilities providing BU faculty with experimental services, data analysis, and research instruments. The lab supports synthetic biology-related activities by creating novel biological systems using a combination of liquid handling robotics, standardized protocols, and computerized software scheduling. In total over 40 molecular biology protocols are automated, including DNA assembly, DNA/RNA purification, sequencing, storage, PCR, transformation, and several characterization assays.

Automation

OpenTrons OT-2 Liquid Handling Robot

The OpenTrons Robotic Liquid Handler is equipped with two replaceable high-precision electronic pipettes that can be either single or multi-channels. There are 10 open deck slots available for various types of standard labware, and the capabilities of the robotic liquid handler can be expanded with swappable on-deck modules.

Hamilton Microlab STAR Liquid Handling Robot

The Hamilton Liquid Handler achieves high accuracy, precision, and repeatability from sub-microliter to large volumes. This allows for the automation of several molecular biology processes including DNA assembly, transformation, PCR, NGS library prep, and more. The DAMP Lab offers multiple fragment assembly and cloning using bacteria-based gene assembly systems with Gibson assembly methodology. All final DNA constructs are sequence verified.
