Overview

The Design, Automation, Manufacturing, and Processes (DAMP) Lab at Boston University is an academic cloud lab located on the Charles River Campus in downtown Boston. The mission of the DAMP Lab is to create a state-of-the-art, remotely accessible biotechnology facility that interacts with remote users and AI agents entirely via software. The lab achieves this through well-defined software interfaces, highly replicable protocols, and cutting-edge automation equipment and techniques. Funded through a robust industrial membership program, federal grants, and individual user service-level agreements, the lab also maintains a strong focus on biosecurity initiatives.

 

Applicants for these positions should firmly believe in the lab's mission and want to explicitly address the unique challenges of building and scaling a cloud lab. Key responsibilities include collaborating directly with industrial partners, developing workflows tailored specifically for automation, and formally documenting and archiving laboratory processes. Emphasizing open-source software, broad dissemination, and community promotion are also central to these roles. Because the lab actively engages with the wider academic and industrial ecosystems, publication and public speaking opportunities will be common, and occasional travel may be required.

 

Please note: All positions are fully in-person and require a strong commitment to a regular, active presence in the office and laboratory environments. Candidates must be highly adaptable to a rapidly changing workflow and schedule as the lab scales its operations.
