Undergraduate Research Assistant Opportunity
-
The DAMP Lab at Boston University is seeking motivated undergraduates for a Spring-semester UROP position (6–8 hrs/week) focused on laboratory automation, liquid-handling robotics, and automated method development. Students will gain hands-on experience with Opentrons and Hamilton systems while learning to script, test, and optimize automated biological workflows using Python and Hamilton’s VENUS software. Responsibilities include developing and debugging automation protocols, supporting routine operation of liquid handlers, running calibration and QC tests, and helping translate manual wet-lab procedures into high-throughput, reproducible automated methods. Training covers Python-based automation, Opentrons API/Protocol Designer, workflow validation, and data-driven performance analysis, with projects centered on DNA preparation, biological assay setup, and workflow optimization. This position is ideal for students interested in the intersection of programming, robotics, and synthetic biology, offering highly marketable skills for careers in biotech R&D, biofoundries, and automation engineering.
