1) RESEARCH SYSTEMS ENGINEER II, ENG Electrical & Computer Engineering

The research group led by Prof. Douglas Densmore is hiring a computational lab technician to maintain and develop computational tools and manage IT systems for the Design, Automation, Manufacturing, and Prototyping (DAMP) and the Cross- disciplinary Integration of Design Automation Research (CIDAR) labs. These are part of the Biological Design Center, Biomedical Engineering Department, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University. The labs focus on specifying, designing, building, and testing novel biological systems and microfluidic approaches in a fast, standard, cost-effective, and reproducible manner. Using the DAMP and CIDAR lab's infrastructure including liquid handling robots, RT-qPCR machines, advanced microscopy, and microfluidic fabrication equipment, this position will also help to develop and improve computational software tools for automating hardware workflows and microfluidic devices for use in Synthetic Biology applications. Further, this position will collaborate with biologists, engineers, designers, and lab managers to execute on a broad range of projects, from building new software features to improve user experiences, to architecting infrastructure to support a fast-growing user base and research needs. Finally, the candidate will program, create protocols, manage deployment, and maintain all computer hardware and software to ensure the smooth running of computer systems, under the direct supervision of the DAMP lab manager.

 

Required Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development and/or Information Technology.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks to deliver on goals with strict time and performance requirements.

  • Ability to work in ambiguous research environments by asking follow up questions and setting internal goals and milestones.

  • Ability to work well with a team in a fast-paced environment and work independently.

  • Be familiar with the software development life cycle, from system analysis to test and deployment, Git (for management of source code), basic algorithms, and object-oriented programming.

  • Expertise in Python, Javascript, Java. Additional experience in PHP, Scala, and Go, with Swift, Kotlin, etc. are a bonus.

  • Interest in working with external lab customers to develop processes and projects. Includes the development of business relationships including writing detailed quotes for customers and writing scientific methods.

  • Interest in creating reports and data for scientific journals working closely with the lab manager.
